Summary

From the international bestselling expert on dealing with assholes

'With cutting-edge research and real-life examples that are thought-provoking and often hilarious, this is an indispensable resource'
Gretchen Rubin, author of The Happiness Project

'At last someone has provided clear steps for rejecting, dejecting, deflecting, and deflating the jerks who blight our lives。 Better still, that someone is the great Bob Sutton, which ensures that the information is useful, evidence-based, and fun to read'
Robert Cialdini, author of Influence and Pre-Suasion

'If only Bob Sutton's book had been available to help me deal with the full complement of 1st-class assholes I've encountered in my 50-year professional life。 No names shall be mentioned'
Tom Peters, co-author of In Search of Excellence

Being around assholes, whether at work or elsewhere, can damage performance and affect wellbeing: having one asshole in a team has been shown to reduce performance by 30 to 40%, and research shows that rudeness spreads like a common cold。 In The Asshole Survival Guide, Stanford professor Robert Sutton offers practical advice on identifying and tackling any kind of asshole - based on research into groups from uncivil civil servants to French bus drivers, and 8,000 emails that he has received on asshole behaviour。

With expertise and humour, he provides a cogent and methodical game-plan to fight back。 First, he sets out the asshole audit, to find out what kind of asshole needs dealing with, and asshole detection strategies。 Then he reveals field-tested, sometimes surprising techniques, from asshole avoidance and asshole taxes, to mind-tricks and the art of love bombing。 Finally, he explains the dangers of asshole blindness - when the problem might be yours truly。

Readers will learn how to handle assholes - in the workplace and beyond - once and for all!

While it is full of interesting stories and the author uses humor, which I like, there really aren't many practical tools shared other than, "Get as far away from the Asshole as you can。 Whether it be move your desk 6 feet away or move to another company or State。" So, I can't give this book too many stars。 While it is full of interesting stories and the author uses humor, which I like, there really aren't many practical tools shared other than, "Get as far away from the Asshole as you can。 Whether it be move your desk 6 feet away or move to another company or State。" So, I can't give this book too many stars。 。。。more

Verbosity maximus The problem with many self help books is they think more words is better。 Wrong。 Keep the writing to the bare bones so that you get your points across。 There is way too much waffle here。 It’s probably two thirds longer than it needed to be。 What about the book? Well the ideas seem reasonable。 To be honest I should have read the blurb as I thought this was about assholes in general whereas it is specifically about bosses or work colleagues which I’ve never had a problem with。 Wh Verbosity maximus The problem with many self help books is they think more words is better。 Wrong。 Keep the writing to the bare bones so that you get your points across。 There is way too much waffle here。 It’s probably two thirds longer than it needed to be。 What about the book? This book helps remind you that you are not alone if you face difficult people。 However, I was left wanting more concrete information about how to deploy some of the strategies。 There weren't any new strategies that the average person probably hasn't thought of already, although that is due to the nature of the topic and the limited research on it to date, rather than a failure on the author's part。 Overall, the book could have been much shorter。 This book helps remind you that you are not alone if you face difficult people。 However, I was left wanting more concrete information about how to deploy some of the strategies。 There weren't any new strategies that the average person probably hasn't thought of already, although that is due to the nature of the topic and the limited research on it to date, rather than a failure on the author's part。 Overall, the book could have been much shorter。 。。。more

A good read, with helpful tips on dealing with a**hole behaviour。 Also, contains a few disturbing instances, but nonetheless- a good experience!

I read the No Asshole Rule ages ago and loved it。 This book is great。 I plan to read it a few more times and use it as a reference book so I can be sure and check my assholian ways

Happily read and finished 。 Love some interesting lines。 Probably, can connect life easily with certain incidents。

Charmaine

Very interesting read, had some good tips but was quite long and boring at times

Amanda Martinelli

Great read。 Made me analyze not only the huge assholes in my life, but how I’ve been an asshole in other people’s lives too。 Mostly it scientifically backed up avoidance, distancing and boundaries。 Even when assholes vilify you for it。 It releases my guilt for guarding my vibe。

Meh。。it's okay。 I was really hoping for a more psychological approach to dealing with difficult people (conflict resolution, de-escalation, etc), however this book is more about various methods of avoidance (which can be pretty damaging, psychologically, in the long run) and appropriate vs inappropriate ways to "fight back"。 It's also mostly comprised of stories and examples, with brief and generalized advice sprinkled throughout。 Maybe more of an entertaining read than a serious self-help one, Meh。。it's okay。 I was really hoping for a more psychological approach to dealing with difficult people (conflict resolution, de-escalation, etc), however this book is more about various methods of avoidance (which can be pretty damaging, psychologically, in the long run) and appropriate vs inappropriate ways to "fight back"。 It's also mostly comprised of stories and examples, with brief and generalized advice sprinkled throughout。 Maybe more of an entertaining read than a serious self-help one, but not a bad book overall。 。。。more

Although I liked the general message of the book, it somehow took me a long time to finish it。 Had some trouble reading through the endless examples。

Many good tips。

Becky

Good suggestions for dealing with bullies, etc in my life。

Decent advice for dealing with difficult people。 It always comes back to - you can't change them, but you can change your reactions to them or your strategies to deal with them。 Decent advice for dealing with difficult people。 It always comes back to - you can't change them, but you can change your reactions to them or your strategies to deal with them。 。。。more

Osa näistä ohjeista pätee ihan tavallissakin elämässä työpaikan ulkopuolella。 Amerikkalaisen tekijän tapaan toistoa on useissa paikoissa。

Nothing new here。I thought it might be funnier。

Monica

Not just a catchy title but an interesting self inspection on who this applies to, how to detect them, how to avoid them and if needed, how to conquer them。

Sara Phelps

Nice short read with interesting ideas and stories。 Thankfully I’m not dealing with assholes currently, so not especially pertinent。

Non-fiction book that gives advice and tricks on how to deal with those people who are just not good to be around。 It focuses primarily on the work environment, but could easily be applied to every part of life。This is a follow-up to the No Asshole Rule, which I haven't read。 I think I should have, as it's referenced often and may have improved my reading of the book。Overall, I'm neutral。 There were some interesting notes and tricks, but nothing that really blew my mind。 If you do read it, I sug Non-fiction book that gives advice and tricks on how to deal with those people who are just not good to be around。 It focuses primarily on the work environment, but could easily be applied to every part of life。This is a follow-up to the No Asshole Rule, which I haven't read。 I think I should have, as it's referenced often and may have improved my reading of the book。Overall, I'm neutral。 There were some interesting notes and tricks, but nothing that really blew my mind。 If you do read it, I suggest you read No Asshole Rule first。 。。。more

Glad I read it, wish I had done so years ago。 Lots of good points, especially the one that says there is no sure-fire solution to Assholes。 It felt very reassuring to know that some of the less overt but no less damaging behaviors I've experienced since rejoining the civilian world really do fall into the category of "Asshole" actions, and really aren't acceptable。 (The Military sometimes skews your expectations and ideas of what is and isn't 'okay。') Glad I read it, wish I had done so years ago。 Lots of good points, especially the one that says there is no sure-fire solution to Assholes。 It felt very reassuring to know that some of the less overt but no less damaging behaviors I've experienced since rejoining the civilian world really do fall into the category of "Asshole" actions, and really aren't acceptable。 (The Military sometimes skews your expectations and ideas of what is and isn't 'okay。') 。。。more

It could be written as an article (summary) and it would be enough。

The writer is very methodical in his writing。 In a way it made it harder to keep focus on the book, although the stories the author had collected did bring my attention back。 I didn't find much of anything new in the advice that was provided, but I do think this is a book I would have like to have when I started my first job。 You see it prepares you for a world brimming with assholes。 I think it would have saved me a lot of heartache and a nervous break down。 Overall I would say that the intent The writer is very methodical in his writing。 In a way it made it harder to keep focus on the book, although the stories the author had collected did bring my attention back。 I didn't find much of anything new in the advice that was provided, but I do think this is a book I would have like to have when I started my first job。 You see it prepares you for a world brimming with assholes。 I think it would have saved me a lot of heartache and a nervous break down。 Overall I would say that the intent is great, the way you have a summary at the end of each chapter that lists everything you can do is also great because it is easy to reference。 Along with the great stories it would have been nice to hear about the authors experience slightly more。 It's probably not good for someone looking for a captivating read, but I definitely recommend it to the people who are facing an asshole problem。 Who knows maybe it didn't work for me because I am no longer relating to the problem。 。。。more

An interesting conceptAn interesting concept but ultimately I was left disappointed as this book did not provide any strategy to survive in a toxic working environment。 The solution is that where you work for an as whole employer you need an exit strategy as your physical and mental health will suffer the longer you remain there。

Definitely recommend it。

Chris

Somewhat helpful though a few too many examples of others。 I would have preferred more tips instead of examples。 Still, I gained some tools。

Mitch

Totally helpful! Very insightful and worthwhile!! A great help!!! Thank you, Robert Sutton!
